Watch out for The Urban Vision

This month, we take a closer look at the newest member of the SWMRT, The Urban Vision, whose aim is to inspire the next generation of urbanization, foster dialogue, and promote excellence.

A 'think-do' tank, The Urban Vision focuses on solutions driven research; advocates best practices in policy and design; and facilitates public dialogue on policy choices.  It was initiated with the belief that cities offer a remarkable way to create a socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and economically thriving society.

Inspiring Urban Thinking:  "Shaping Tomorrow"

Their latest innovation is an interactive map that is the opposite of our own Green Map: it names and shames the areas of the city that need fixing!  It's a website that encourages citizens to report community issues, such as bad roads and garbage problems, and connects them with their local government. They can share their problem, upload pictures, and see it automatically plotted on a city map, where other community members can vote on and discuss it.

Created in conjunction with US based technology firm See Click Fix, Citizen Watch aims to make government transparent and accountable, and at the same time, enable citizens to organize themselves to better their communities.

The three basic principles are:

Empowerment: anyone can report and track non-emergency issues anywhere in the city

Efficiency: Two heads are better than one, and hundreds are better than two! It's easy for everyone to See Click Fix

Engagement: Citizens who take the time to report even minor issues and see them fixed are more likely to get engaged with their communities.  It's a win win.

Waste Manager of the Month

There's more to waste than meets the eye!  Anyone who's started segregation in their house, apartment block, neighborhood, or business, knows that it needs a keen eye and determination to keep it going beyond the initial buzz. That's why we're introducing our 'Waste Manager of the Month' award but it's up to YOU to nominate the recipient.  Is there someone in your area that goes above and beyond the call of dirty duty?  Which member of your staff has impressed you the most with their dedication to segregation?  Who has made the biggest impact on waste management in your area?

If you have a nominee, please email editorcleansheet@me.com with their name, role, and why they deserve the title, in 100 words or less.  We will select just one winner each month who will receive a t-shirt for their efforts and a write up in CLEAN SHEET to share with their friends and family. So what are you waiting for?  Send us a mail today!

Month at a Glance

So, just what the Solid Waste Management Roundtable Bengaluru been doing this month? Here's a snapshot of our activities in September 2010.

Back to School

Mr N S Ramankanth went back to school this month... not to BE a student, but to TEACH the students of Jyoti Nivas Pre-University College all about solid waste management.  More than 1,800 students and faculty members attended the session.  The PUC has now started to manage waste on campus: Separate bins have been provided for plastic and paper waste, and their wish is to become a 'zero-garbage area.'  Top marks to all!

Daily Dump Open Day

Last weekend, the Daily Dump organized an open day to teach visitors all about garbage and in particular, how composting can benefit them AND the environment. More than 300 people showed up to and the day was a huge success.

Platinum Efforts

In just one month of operations, the waste conscious residents of Platinum City have recycled a staggering 2,400 kg of dry waste and made a phenomenal Rs.10,000!  Great job guys!

BBMP

In consultation with the SWMRT, the BBMP has initiated a zero waste management policy at its head office.  We hope that they will see the value of it not only in their offices, but all over Bangalore.

Sadashivnagar Segregates at Source

As reported last month, residents of Sadashivnagar have taken their first steps to zero waste management.  The pictures show the before and after - how it should be!
